Cottages at Summer Village vacation rentals

MAY 2011

Dear Customer:

Winter has finally made its exit and spring
is here!  The leaves are out, the flowers are coming up, and we’re open.  And thanks to all of you, we have a lot of reservations for the coming seasons.  If you have a favorite cottage, or particular time you want to visit, please make a reservation soon at http://www.cottagesatsummervillage.com.

This year we would like to interact more with our guests—both past and present.  We hope you will share your likes and dislikes, your favorite places to visit, tell us about an off-the-beaten path restaurant or beach, or whatever you’d like to share.  Some of you have been coming to the Cottages at Summer Village and southern Maine for years.  If you have some favorite spot or activity you’d like us to know about, please contact me at bgarrey@cottagesatsummervillage.com.  We’ll take your information and share it with our wider audience through our blog, newsletter, or on Facebook.

What’s New at The Cottages at Summer Village this Year?

Pickleball is back

Never heard of pickleball?  I hadn’t either.  Apparently, pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island just off the coast of Seattle, Washington by three fathers whose kids were bored by their usual summertime activities.  The name pickleball came from the family’s cocker

spaniel who used to steal the balls and hide them in the bushes.  The dog’s name was “Pickles.”

Pickleball is a court sport played on a badminton-sized court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center.  It is played with a perforated plastic ball similar to a whiffle ball and paddles which are about twice the size of ping-pong paddles.  It’s easy to learn and can be played socially or very competitively.

Children’s Program

Our popular kid’s program (ages 5-11) is back and it’s still free to both owners and guests.  Jamie Bruno will be joined by Paige McElwain and both are ready with plenty of arts and crafts and games.  A snack will be included.  The program will run on Mondays and Wednesdays (9:00am-12:00pm) and will begin around the 4th of July.  Please sign up ahead of time at the front desk.
